What is Pelvic Floor Repair?
Pelvic Floor Repair (also known as pelvic floor reconstruction or prolapse repair) is a surgical procedure designed to restore the strength, form, and function of the pelvic floor muscles, ligaments and connective tissues. Over time, factors such as childbirth, ageing, menopause, or pelvic surgery can weaken these structures, causing pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence or discomfort, or vaginal wall bulges.
Pelvic Floor Repair aims to:
- Lift and support organs such as the bladder, uterus or rectum that have descended
- Strengthen weakened pelvic floor muscles
- Relieve symptoms including vaginal pressure, discomfort, leakages, and difficulty with sexual intercourse or bowel and bladder function
You can discuss your symptoms and suitability for pelvic floor repair in a free consultation with our experienced gynaecological surgeons.
What Happens During the Surgery?
The surgery is carried out under general or spinal anaesthesia, depending on patient health, the severity of the prolapse, and surgeon recommendation. Different techniques may be used depending on the type of prolapse: anterior repair for prolapse affecting the front vaginal wall (bladder prolapse), posterior repair for the back vaginal wall (rectal prolapse), and vault or apical repair when the top of the vagina has descended following hysterectomy. Some procedures use the patient’s own tissue, while in certain cases mesh or grafts may be considered in line with current guidelines and patient needs. During the procedure, incisions are made in the vaginal wall to access weakened tissue, with excess connective tissue trimmed or repaired and support structures reinforced, often using sutures or grafts, before the site is carefully closed. Patients are usually discharged the same day, with pain relief provided and monitoring to ensure a safe recovery.

Is Pelvic Floor Repair Right for Me?
Pelvic floor repair may be suitable if you:
- Notice symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse (a bulge in or outside the vagina, pelvic pressure)
- Experience urinary or faecal incontinence that affects daily life
- Feel discomfort during sexual intercourse
- Have attempted conservative treatments (like pelvic floor physiotherapy, pessaries) without adequate relief
- Are in general good health and have realistic expectations
It is less suitable if you have certain medical conditions or are planning future pregnancy (some techniques may not be ideal if you want further delivery).
- Reduced or eliminated prolapse symptoms (e.g. pressure, bulge, discomfort)
- Improved bladder and bowel control
- Enhanced quality of life and confidence
- Restored pelvic floor strength, anatomy, and function
- Improved sexual comfort
