What is an Endoscopic Brow Lift?
If your brows sit lower than they used to, you have probably noticed it in the mirror before anyone else did. The upper eyelids can start to feel heavy, the forehead works harder to hold everything up, and your face at rest can look tired or stern even when you feel neither.
A brow lift, sometimes called a forehead lift, repositions the eyebrows and smooths the forehead by lifting the tissue that sits beneath the skin. The endoscopic version is a keyhole operation: a tiny camera lets your surgeon work through a few short incisions hidden in the hair, rather than one long one.
It is often described as minimally invasive, although it is still surgery and deserves the same careful thought as any other procedure.
It is one of several brow lift techniques, and your surgeon will recommend the one that suits your anatomy. You can read about the wider options on our Facelift, Neck and Brow Lift page.
How Does an Endoscopic Brow Lift Work?
The operation usually takes 1 to 2 hours. Here is what happens, step by step.
- 1
Anaesthetic
The procedure is usually carried out under general anaesthetic, so you are asleep throughout.
- 2
Small incisions
Your surgeon makes 3 to 5 short incisions, each around 1 to 2 cm long, just behind the hairline where they are hidden by your hair.
- 3
The endoscope
A thin tube with a tiny camera and light at its tip is passed through one incision. It sends a magnified picture to a screen, so your surgeon can see the tissue clearly without opening up the forehead.
- 4
Release and lift
Working through the other incisions with fine instruments, your surgeon frees the forehead tissue, adjusts the muscles that pull the brows down and cause frown lines, then lifts the brow into its new position.
- 5
Holding it in place
The brow is secured beneath the scalp with small stitches or tiny fixation devices while it heals.
- 6
Closing
The incisions are closed with stitches or clips, which are usually removed after 7 to 14 days.
Most people go home the same day or after one night in hospital.
Endoscopic vs Traditional Brow Lift
A traditional brow lift, also known as a coronal lift, uses one long incision across the top of the head, running from ear to ear. It is effective, but it is a bigger operation with a longer scar.
Endoscopic brow lift
- Incisions
- 3 to 5 short incisions behind the hairline
- Scarring
- Small scars hidden in the hair
- Recovery
- Often quicker, with less swelling
- Scalp numbness
- Generally less, and usually temporary
Traditional brow lift
- Incisions
- One long incision across the scalp
- Scarring
- A longer scar hidden in the hair
- Recovery
- Typically longer
- Scalp numbness
- More common and can last longer
Why the keyhole approach is often chosen
- Smaller scarsA few short incisions rather than one long one.
- No long incision across the headThere is less disruption to the scalp and the hair follicles.
- Recovery is often quickerMany people are back at work within 1 to 2 weeks.
- A clear view for the surgeonThe magnified image allows precise work on the muscles that cause frown lines.
The keyhole approach is not automatically the right choice for everyone. The best technique is the one that fits your face, your hairline and the result you are hoping for, and your surgeon will explain their recommendation.

Is an Endoscopic Brow Lift Right For Me?
This procedure generally suits adults in good health who have mild to moderate lowering of the brow and realistic expectations of what surgery can achieve. It is less about age than anatomy: some people have naturally low brows from early adulthood, while others notice the change later in life.
It usually works best for people with an average or low hairline, because lifting the brow can raise the hairline slightly.
What it can treat
- Low or sagging browsBrows that have dropped towards, or below, the bony rim above the eye.
- Heavy upper eyelids and hoodingA low brow pushes skin down onto the upper eyelid, which can make the eyes look smaller and feel weighed down.
- Forehead linesHorizontal creases are often deepened by constantly raising the brows to compensate for that heaviness.
- Frown lines and a stern resting expressionVertical lines between the brows can make you look cross or worried when you are not.
- Uneven browsMild differences in brow height can sometimes be improved, although perfect symmetry is not a realistic goal.
If you have a high hairline, very heavy forehead skin or more pronounced lowering of the brow, your surgeon may suggest a different brow lift technique. A consultation with one of our GMC registered surgeons is the only reliable way to know which applies to you.
All surgery carries risk. For an endoscopic brow lift these include bleeding, infection, scarring, numbness and uneven brows, and your surgeon will explain how they apply to you before you decide. See the full list of risks.
What an Endoscopic Brow Lift Does Not Do
Knowing the limits of a procedure is as important as knowing its benefits.
- It does not remove eyelid skinExcess skin or fat on the eyelid itself is treated with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).
- It does not treat under eye bagsThese are addressed with lower eyelid surgery.
- It does not lift the cheeks, jawline or neckA facelift or neck lift deals with the lower two thirds of the face.
- It does not change skin qualitySun damage, fine lines and texture respond better to skin and laser treatments.
- It does not stop the ageing processResults are long lasting, but your face will continue to change naturally over time.
What Results Can I Expect?
The aim is a brow that sits in a natural, rested position, with a more open look around the eyes and a smoother forehead. It should not look pulled or surprised.
Results usually last for many years. Individual results vary.
What Are The Risks?
All surgery carries risk, and it is important to weigh these up alongside the benefits. For an endoscopic brow lift, they include:
- Bleeding, bruising or a collection of blood under the skin
- Infection
- Scarring, and thinning or loss of hair around the incisions, which is usually temporary
- Numbness or altered sensation in the forehead and scalp
- Weakness of the muscles that raise the brow, which is usually temporary and rarely permanent
- Uneven brows, or a brow that sits higher or lower than planned
- The brow gradually lowering again over time
- The general risks of an anaesthetic
Your surgeon will explain how these apply to you and answer your questions before you decide. You will be given time to reflect, and there is never any pressure to go ahead.

Patient Reviews
To my surprise I found my surgery emotionally challenging. I can’t express how much Tracy in the aftercare team saved me! She was like having my mother on the end of the phone. Validating, normalising and offering reassurance with every new anxiety I kept presenting. Such an essential part of the service that I had not expected to need but valued so highly. Thank you Tracy!

Your Recovery Timeline
Everyone heals at their own pace, but this is a typical timeline.
First few days
Expect swelling and bruising, which can travel down to the eyelids and cheeks. Tightness across the forehead and a mild headache are common, and sleeping with your head raised helps.
Weeks 1 to 2
Stitches or clips are removed and bruising fades. Most people return to desk work and light daily activities.
Weeks 4 to 6
You can usually build back up to exercise and heavier lifting once your surgeon is happy with your healing.
The following months
Numbness, tingling or itching in the scalp gradually settles. The final position of the brow is usually clear after 3 to 6 months.

FAQs
The incisions are short and placed behind the hairline, so the scars are normally hidden by your hair. They fade over time, although no surgeon can promise that a scar will be invisible.
You are asleep during the operation, so you will not feel anything. Afterwards, most people describe tightness and a dull headache rather than sharp pain, and this is managed with pain relief.
It can raise the hairline slightly. If your hairline is already high, your surgeon may recommend a different technique, so mention any concerns at your consultation.
A natural result is the goal, and your surgeon will plan the height and shape of your brow with you beforehand. A brow that sits too high is a recognised risk, which is why choosing an experienced surgeon matters.
It depends on whether the heaviness comes from the brow, the eyelid or both. Your surgeon will examine you and explain which procedure, or combination, is likely to give the result you want.
Yes. Male brows usually sit lower and flatter than female brows, and your surgeon will plan the lift to keep that shape. You can explore our face and head surgery for men.
Results typically last for many years. Your face will continue to age naturally, and factors such as sun exposure and smoking can affect how long they last.
The price depends on the technique and whether it is combined with another procedure such as eyelid surgery. Use our price check or speak to a Patient Advisor for a personalised quote.
